Concordia's Travel Tips
Before you Leave Home:
Call your bank(s) to let them know that you will be traveling to St. John, USVI. If you are not flying directly to St. Thomas, USVI, include your layover location(s). Most debit and credit card companys will block the use of your card if they are not expecting to see charges coming from so far out of your normal itinerary.
The USVI and BVI are very close together geographically and you will often receive a cell phone signal from Tortola while you are on St John. If you make a call using a signal from the BVI, you may be billed at international rates. Talk to your cell phone service provider before you leave home. They will be able to answer your questions regarding roaming charges and coverage for your plan. Letting them know before you travel that you will be near, but not in, the BVI often helps you avoid international charges.
When packing for your stay at Concordia Eco-Resort remember that you will be in the tropics. Pack light, summer weight clothing. Even in January and February when our coldest temperatures are in the high 60's, a light pullover for early morning is the warmest clothing you will need.
Now that airlines serving the USVI charge for checked luggage many people traveling here are opting to carry on luggage instead of checking bags. If checking bags at the airport, make sure your essentials are in your carry-on just in case your luggage does not arrive when you do!
What are Carry-on Essentials?
Take our phone number with you in case you need to reach us en route. 340.693.5855
We recomend that you put a flashlight in your carry-on. It can get very dark at Concordia at night, which is wonderful for star watching, but can make finding your way through camp difficult after sunset without a flashlight.
A Swimsuit and Sunglasses are probably the second most essential items you will bring. If you can get to the beach while you wait for it, late luggage becomes much less traumatic.
A Passport is required if you plan to visit the British Virgin Islands.
Cash and Credit Cards. There are ATM's on St. Thomas and St. John but not at Concordia; the nearest ATMs are a 10 - 12 minute drive away in Coral Bay; one at Lilly's Gourmet Market and the other at Love City Minimart.
Other Items that might make your Carry-on Essentials Packing List:
A beach towel, though you can purchase one with our logo on it at our store as a souvenir.
A hat for sun protection
A light pullover or sweater for the cooler evenings in January and February
A backpack and water bottle
An extra flashlight or headlamp
A good book (we also have a lending library)
If you plan on cooking in your unit, we suggest you purchase some food items in Cruz Bay (Dolphin Market or Starfish Market) or Coral Bay (Lilly Gourmet Market or Love City Minimart) before heading to Concordia:
Bread and Bakery Products
Dairy Products such as Milk or Yogurt
Fruit and Vegetables including Salad Fixings
Meat or Seafood
Items we have for purchase at Concordia, in case you need:
Ice & Ice Cream
Gifts, Books & Post Cards
Toiletries and Sun Protection
Beer, Soda, Water, & Juice
T-Shirts, Beach Towels, & Souvenirs
Insect Repellent & After bite Salve
There is a very important protocol for meeting, greating and doing business with people in the Virgin Islands. Go Slow; take time to make eye contact, smile and greet everyone you meet with a "Good Morning," "Good Afternoon" or "Good Evening" before starting to do your business. "Island Time;" slow, easy and polite.
When you arrive at the Cyril E. King Airport (STT) you will be on the west end of the island of St. Thomas. Once you have collected your luggage, exit the building and you will find the Taxis waiting to take you to the Ferry Terminal at Redhook, on the east end of the island. After greeting him, let the Concierge know you are traveling to St John; he will put you into the appropriate taxi. Taxi fares are set and there is a charge per bag for large luggage. It is customary to tip.
You will arrive on St. John at the Cruz Bay dock; this is the only pedestrian ferry dock on St. John. Carry cash in small denominations for this portion of your journey to cover taxi shuttle, tips, and ferry ride. Porters are available for hire at both the Red Hook and Cruz Bay ferry docks, as well as the airport.
Upon arriving on St. John you will need to travel to the far (and quiet) end of the island to reach Concordia Eco-Resort. For details and suggestions on this portion of the journey see the Transportation section of Frequently Asked Questions.
See you soon!
